Discussion Questions
A. Discuss the process of self-awareness/self-consciousness. You should mainly focus on self-regulation.
Self-awareness as it relates to self-regulation is the process inter-parallel interaction between the two which allows the acknowledgement of self-awareness of you as an object and because of this a person is able to self-regulate. Further, to self-regulate is the ability to use ones self-awareness to accomplish and control, direct their own actions and keep an assessment of goals and ideas in its present state.
Self-consciousness is another facet that works interchangeably with self-regulation because it allows the critical evaluation of self-awareness and uses two types of self-consciousness (private and public) and whether the feedback is negative or positive there will be an affect on self-regulation to either change and modify or become inattentive to one or both. If the public self-consciousness level is negative and detrimental self-awareness will be effectively stimulated (self-regulate) to change and conform whereas private self-consciousness is more passive and does always initiate self-regulation.
B. Discuss ways in which you can develop your enhanced self-regulation.
Since self-regulation is the ways in which people control and direct their own action – modifying behavior to extract positive characteristics is one way to change, using conscious cognitive thought patterns to consciously control and direct behavior is a second way, assessing goals and ideals at beginning standard level and evolve and change to accomplish is another.
C. Create a “Self-Schema Map” as seen on Page 68.

D. Discuss gender identity, how it develops and how it impacts thought processes, personality traits and social functioning.
Gender identity is the identity of oneself as a male or female and as they group up they act out roles that are consistent with their sex and what is expected from them. Thru the roles of discovery and conditioning this affects their behavioral patterns and thought processes while gender socialization affects the way in which a child is reared to accept the role of developing cooperative relationships, competiveness and nurturing social relationships based on expectedness.
As gender identity is established it assists in the development of personality traits by interaction with others, social functioning and also helps to frame and establish gender identity.
E. Discuss the ways in which we evaluate ourselves. How do we enhance self-esteem? How do we change it? Discuss how we create social identities (including ethnic identities).
The ways in which we evaluate ourselves is self-discovery and observation of self, characteristics, personality traits, and ability to be social, interactive ability, reflection of self and behavioral patterns. Further self-monitoring of goals, mindset, values, belief are also ways that are used in evaluation of self.
Next, comes the thought of what is self-esteem and that is the evaluation of self-concept. In order to change or enhance self-esteem is to look at oneself in a positive manner to nurture and escalate the ability to change and evolve. Evolving and improving the view of self is one of the most important aspects in learning and being who you are regardless of resistance by others. The mental image of self is what allows the portrayal of a high self-esteem and the fight to retain identity is the best route to establishment of self-esteem to retain present level and elevate it upward.
Positive reinforcement and a self pat on back when goals are achieved can change the reflections of self-esteem and help push forward the need to succeed and retain high self-regard.
Social identities and ethnic identities are those aspects of our self-concepts based on our group memberships. These identities are created by internalizing self, merging self and identifying with the group which establishes a shared set of values, beliefs and goals that reflects themselves and their social world. Also, these identities are protected by support of each other, rediscovering and further anchoring of who they are and what their race has accomplished.
