Name of Study

Men’s Alcohol Intoxication and Condom Use During Sexual
Assault Perpetration

Literature

The purpose of this study is to compile and gather data to examine sexual assault and the possible use of alcohol and condoms in sexual assaults. The study reflects that despite preventive efforts sexual assault is a concern of all in the United States with approximately 300,000 women each year being sexually assaulted (raped). Women who have been violated sexually are affected with various health related STDs and somatic complaints. Further the use of alcohol consumption is a concern that is involved in cases of unprotected sex and the majority of sexual assaults.

Based on the study it reflects that the more alcohol consumed the least likely a condom will be used. The purpose of future studies will be done to parallel the original study done by Davis et al (2008) but with a larger sampling.

Method Used to Conduct the Study

The Study was done by gathering data by utilizing questionnaires on an experimental basis. Demographics, sexual assault perpetration, alcohol and condom use during sexual assault was administered by questionnaire basis to every participant. Single men (N=225) were recruited by advertisements placed in weekly papers, campus papers, public flyers and online advertisements for participation in the study.

Measures

Measures consisted of authenticating and collecting data to establish the age of participants, ethnicity, race, student status, income, and alcohol consumption levels and history – quantity and frequency, to establish whether a decisive pattern exists.

Modified Sexual Experiences Survey (MSES) was utilized and consist of a 61 item questionnaire and is a modified version of Koss and Oros’s (1982) original Sexual Experience Survey (SES).

Results

Based on the results over half of the participants reported some type of sexual assault 52.7% (n = 117). Forced sexual assault 33.8% (n=75), sexual coercion by 18.1% (n=40),
attempted rape by 10.4% (n=23), incapacitated rape by 20.0% (n=44) and forcible rape by 10.8% (n=24) of respondents. The use of condoms consisted of 35.6% (n=79) and with alcohol consumption x2 (4) = 49.23, p<.001, were related to the state of incapacitated rapes that is inclusive in the above amounts listed that involved sexual assaults.

Conclusion of the Study

The study reflects and supports the hypotheses regarding alcohol consumption and condom nonuse that the more alcohol consumed the least likely a condom would be used. Supportive of this established fact 61.2% of all reported sexual assaults involve levels of consumption of alcohol and the majority (70%) of penetrative sexual assault did not involve condom use. Further as relates to the study it alleges that two primary pathways results and support association of alcohol and non-condom use because it affects the cognitive pattern of thought that involves decision making which impairs thought of safety during sex. Secondly, the alcohol related pathway alleges that this causes an increased aggression in behavior that releases inhibited responses and overrides reasoning and releases a surge of aggression to have sex regardless of protest or fight with no thought for condom use.

Your opinion/thoughts about the study

My opinion of the study is that I agree that if someone is in a high level of intoxication then rational thought processes is not possible and what is left is primal urges. Primal urges are of a relatively animalistic level and would of course not be the thought of a rational, sane and logical man.

The categories utilized to support these assertions (or theories) is well thought out and I agree with the conclusive evidence that was proven and could probably be viewed as summary conclusion for an overall study to establish that alcohol is indeed a factor in most rapes and the lack of utilizing protectants is established by indeed the receding of cognitive reasoning and rational thought.
