One of the first stages of being recruited in assisting for this year Project “Performing Arts” at Saginaw Valley State University was to have Speaker and Project Coordinator Ashley Evans come in and give a lecture regarding our (students) participation in this project. As the Project Coordinator relayed the Black Studies Class was and is asked to participate by providing Three Artistic Themes to be included in the coming event on October 27, 2010 which will consist of Music, Dance and Singing.
My participation consisted of being involved in group discussions in class and obtaining a theme of interest which was and is Hip Hop which I later changed to Hip Hop Music and Dance because one cannot exist without the other.
My first question was to gather as much detail as possible because it’s a subject that I am not really familiar with and after surfing the internet for what seemed like a twinkling of an eye I printed off a lot of information regarding Hip Hop Music and then added the category of Hip Hop Dance.
Further, having become fascinated by the subject or theme I began to dream about what it takes to make it out of a high-risk concrete jungle and really listen to the lyrics and click with what the (rappers with soul) entertainers are relaying to all who will hear. I have listened and not listened but I began to feel the soul of each artist pulsate through each lyric and hear the pain, sorrow, romance and love of those trying to help the young by warning them of what the streets offer and that is no life but death – quick, hard, cruel and cold on the street. No sympathy is what you get from those

killers and abusers and so-called sister and brothers. Use and manipulate that is what the game is on the street…getting used and abused is not the way any person should want to live.
After, hearing this I too could identify with what it takes to stay cold and alive and feel a sadness for the youth seduced by the fast money, ladies, expensive cars, rim machines, fancy name brand clothes, G-wear shoes, fly tennis shoes and see the utter uncaring for each other that the streets breed- survival of the fittest.
Compiling the information or knowledge that I gained I wrote a paper with several categories addressing Hip Hop Music and Hip Hop Dance and noted some of the most prominent Hip Hop Artists and the originators of this music and dance category. Further, taking note of the countries that contributed to its beginning, growth, versatility and staying power was written in my report. I tried to include as many people (artists) as possible, but because I didn’t know all of the people that helped Hip Hop grow and evolve the acknowledgement is still there with our gratitude.
After putting in categories in the written report and trying to cover and condense as much information in each section the report was done. (Information was gathered off the internet after doing a search on Hip Hop.)
Next, came the next step in the Project (crash course in Power Point) which consisted of making a Power Point Slide Show. This was the easiest part taking the term paper and converting it into a

Power Point Slide Show and the next part was the interesting part – how to put music into the slide show. In order to learn this part I down-loaded instruction off the internet telling how to do this part. Next, I followed the directions and incorporated music into the Power Point Slide Show and added pictures of artists with their names from the Hip Hop website and finished and concluded my project.
