Inspired by Jazz Age Josephine, by Jonah Winter, illustrated by Marjorie Priceman.
People People hear a lark about a girl who sat and dreamed a lot
Living on the side of New Orleans she sat with big brown eyes abrimming
Born in St. Louis with the blues running through her veins and singing until the tune told the same
Josephine had nothing but a ragged dress and worn-out old shoes in a shack of weary and cold
Grandma and her lived with sparse and none but a bed of paper, floor and little food
Holding Josie in arms of sweet, dear and old Grandma said a day will come and all will reveal for a princess is you
Kids mean and cruel looked her with amusement and glee to see her with nothing found
Being optimistic Josie put on a show and danced a variety of steps of many and surprisingly got paid a dollar
She danced and danced until her heart sang and she never tired as sunshine poured from her eyes
A night of fire scoured the black side as the White people chased the Black people as homes disappeared
Tears falling from eyes of fright Josie ran ran looking for a place where White people treat you better
Running Running Josie went coast to coast dancing with a traveling show until she met New York
Josie got a job and made Black face her game to live and act but became ashame
Sparkling and happy she left for France to show all her dance at Gay Paree!
Josie became the all as her Grandma said watched adored she
