WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT THE JUVENILE SYSTEM

What I learned about the juvenile system is first the definition of a juvenile and the process of how a juvenile is channeled through the Juvenile Justice System. The Juvenile Justice Systems comprises three sectors that deal with handling juvenile delinquents and that is as follows:
1. Law Enforcement and other referral sources
2. Juvenile Court
3. Disposition
The Juvenile Justice System was previously set up to process all through the court system for adults but because they were at risk it was modified to accommodate youth of 18 years and younger. Mostly, it was based on the Traditional Model (1899-1960), and then the Due Process Model (1960s – 1980s) and lastly the Punitive Model (1980s – present) to base assumption of a juvenile culpability, development, cause of delinquency, role of the state in relaying punishment, role of due process, level of discretion of the court to place youth in either the juvenile court or the adult system and the need for confidentiality to be maintained and goals of the system.
The matter of juveniles is a tough call and I feel being overly indulgent is a mistake and the hope is to keep them out of the system if possible. Try to keep youth away from negative influences and encourage learning, culture, manners and put them in self-help programs.
Enroll youth in as many educational activities as possible to prepare them for an easier experience in college.
