Hello. My name is Felicia McCaw and I am a returning student to Delta College. My dream has always been to attend college and get a degree and a good job. Further, I have always felt that if a person is willing to dream than he or she can achieve their dream and that the sky is the limit. My life has always seemed to be a changing kaleidoscopes of dreams, priorities and must-do that is a given requirement for me to standstill and fulfill these priorities. Some of these items and dreams had to be placed on the backburner while I continued to work…I am not a serious procrastinator but I have my times when I do put off as much as possible. I am a dreamer who has always wanted to be a writer… right now I don’t care what I write as long as I am achieving a facet of my dream and that is an eternally revolving sphere that is gaining time and learning as it whirls around. My life has always been a little different and I am using these unusual experiences to gain knowledge of who I am and why I was sent here and I am only trying to help others also focus on their dreams. Also, I feel strongly that God gives us our own unique talent and we must use them or not grumble if we don’t.
My interest in poetry is just one of the facets of writing that I wanted to explore since I had started just writing down a little of this and a little of that. It has evolved from the very simplistic to a higher level of poems that astound me because I thought I could just turn in my old drafts but now I realize that by taking this class I have evolved, evolved and evolved and I am just amazed and thrilled by the change that has taken over and reflects in my poetry. Also, not only has it affected my ability to write but it has made me think and know that life is true to you and will not lie and poets are the same way they portray their thoughts and allow you to roam and try to interpret them. This class has given me a dream and that is “Life as a Poet” is extremely interesting and I would not mind continuing to expand on my own and further gain insights and techniques in writing poetry and hopefully getting published since that would be a coup in my cap.
The first step was learning some of things that define a poem, what it consists of and how to approach writing a poem. This class also instructed the other students and I that poetry is not a dry subject it is the heart of a poet in written form. It is the life blood of the one who writes it and relays to the world unselfishly that they love, adore, share, cherish, care and carefully gives a small part of them in each piece they write. This is what this class has taught me and I feel that I have moved further and further from where I used to be and wish to evolve myself further and learn some more of the harder techniques which I approached with trepidation and fear. I feel that in order to get rid of your fear one must pray and then proceed ahead and do your best. I guess what I would say to an incoming person who want s to write poetry is not to be intimidated by the terminology but become relaxed and let the terminology dance around in your mind and see yourself juggling it around and say what is this that is attempting to scare me and say back to the would be fear inducer … it definitely is not you that is intimidating me…I can do this and I will and I will get better as I become more comfortable and more fluent in the language of poetry.
Furthermore, I came to the realization that poetry was used to woo the most beautiful of women and those that were not beautiful were woo as well because of the very fieriness of their nature and strength of character. It was then evolved by men authors to show that not only is poetry a reflection of love but it is also a reflection of the world and dignity, pride, characteristics of all written in full to reflect the world in which we live and to show that we are not always what we seem like a poem it has hidden depths and sometimes these layers has to be revealed layer by layer just like a man and a woman and you will find the inner beauty within. That is what this poetry class has taught me and I will never forget the lesson learned because it has evolved me in another way that I will always appreciate.
Thank you.
