CRIMINAL JUSTICE 220 - WEEK 2 - DISCUSSION 2

Choices, Values, and Ethics
Read the article titled “Criminal Justice Ethics for Everyone”, located at http://policelink.monster.com/education/articles/103583-criminal-justice-ethics-for-everyone. Next, compare and contrast the concepts of ethics coming from the top, training ethics, and controlling one’s self found in the article with that of establishing a police value system found in the text. Decide whether or not the concepts relate, and justify your position.

In regard to the article “Criminal Justice Ethics for Everyone” based on the relayed information the concern is whether or not ethics is restricted to police or is inclusive to include all. As a facilitator ethics is a complement to integrity. The pair goes hand in hand and without one there is no other.

As per the article, in comparison the concepts of ethics is a hard won attributor to the effect of hard won moralistic character whether the evaluation is from the top dog in legalistic channels or at the base of the police system which would consist of the activities done by a foot cop. Integrious behavior has to be instilled with the objectivity of temptation continuously dispelled. Because of this ethical and integrity traits are interned and works as a stabilizer that will allow the correct behavior and resistant to the emotional disenchantment with their profession.

At the top or at the base of the police structure is the desired implacability, forthwrightness to be an exemplary example that helps retain legalistic structural norms. As such the training ethics is symbolic of the country’s pride, honor, strictness and no-nonsense approach to corrective administration. With that in mind comes the ability to control self with self analysis and an adherence to duty first and self second.

Based on this, police managers are the image and emulatory images that lower officers see and agreeably follow. Further because of this there can be no dereliction in duty ever for we are the eyes that are seen always first and conduct always questioned. Whether police managers, training agencies the lines of good conducts will always be a “no thank you” and adhere to duties that they have been trained to do. Control is not a state of mind it is a self-facilitator that is inwardly instilled and it does not have to be studied it is intricately interwoven and as such it compels correction and pride.

Therefore, the control of self cannot be taught it is self and as self it is honor bred true and deep. Valuelistic is appropriately named because it alleviates no conscience from doing duty it is restrictive and stern. Further with that thought in mind it is conceptually true that with comparison and contrast the same issues that trouble the base trouble the top. Also, ethics and integrity can be learned but it has to be instilled early and as such a troubled analogy of how to correct an issue when cops are dirty is paramount to how to reraise a child and instill these correct and upstanding traits.

Background checks facilitate one thing only and that is whether any criminal activity has been done – it cannot measure the level of temptation but preventatives and accurate duty can unremorsely stop all temptation and question the level of moral fortitude. Further these checks do not ensure that the corrective moral fiber is inducted in this individual or not and as such there are no guarantees at all.

Based upon this the concepts of training, managing correlate and correspond but the ability to ensure correct ethics and integrious behavior will be enacted but cannot ever be guaranteed because it has to be looked at on an individualized basis and not as an overall group. Further, if I had to approach this positional issue the goal is to teach what is expected and not allow personal details to interfere in the performing of duties or job whether from management to base.

Explain the concepts of intrinsic and instrumental values, and provide at least two (2) examples that illustrate how each set of values is crucial to ensure ethical law enforcement.

The concept of intrinsic values are facilitators that help to provide a state of satisfaction for the achievement of those items that are not a complement to instrumental values. Further as an inward quality this in itself is a supporter of ethics thereby in its own right a facilitator and stabilizer to ethics. An example of intrinsic values is the internal gratification acquired from being ethical and integrious thereby signifying that it is not only a conceptualized principle but an internal trait.
The concept of instrumental values is a purposeful stimulant that allows a stimulus to propel us to get or achieve something external as well as internally. An example of instrumental values is the achievement of educational status which acts as a gratuity in itself because it brings about the ability to gain something intangible and tangible.

Question by Professor
What does the class think of "no gratuities" policies including free coffee and food. Shop owners want to say thank you in a concrete way, but officers have to turn it down. What are the ethical issues?

Response to Professor

I agree that the "no gratuities" policies is a facilitator to ensuring that officers do not get lulled and become complacent in accepting these offerings. These "gifts" are sometimes looked on as bribes and looking the other way ... even if the intent is not there to do wrong ... the actions of acceptance are still looked at suspiciously. To avoid all misunderstandings a simple "no thank you" - settles all issues that might occur and as such internal feelings of moral correctness is retained as well as ethical performance.

Thank you.

Question by Professor

The situation following protests by the Black Lives Matter movement continues to be difficult. What does the class think of the ethical issues involving these protests? Is it ethical or effective to block traffic and inconvenience hundreds of people? Is the title "Black Lives Matter" "racist" as Rudy Guiliano claims, or does it obscure other truths: all lives matter, and by focusing on police interactions with blacks obscures the reality of the problem of black violence against blacks?
What does the class think?

Response to Professor

I agree that every life of all races matter and the rate of oppression symbolizes fear, hate, prejudice, bias and discriminatory practices. The inner connection of the lives of Black People and the quandary they are in is a carryover from their involuntary migration to this country and forcible suppression.

As a Black American, my concern is not just for this race but for all races to work in a complementary fashion to educate and evolve this country. But without cooperation this process is hindered due to race clashes and defensive stances that Black People have to take in order to survive.

Violence is not the answer or mass stages of outrage when threats are levied against police officers all the time and cause trepidation in doing their duty. Their duties are to protect the people and as such deal and gauge situations correctly.
My opinion to this is that this site or protest is not “racist” but it does not address the violence that is exhibited when there is black on black violence against each other. As far as I am concern there is no ethical concern because these are values held by Black People to help protect themselves by appealing publically and without violence and as long as permission has been given to stage this demonstration there is no issue.

As with all races there is hidden danger, violence against each other and it is not just a Black problem.

Thank you.

Reply to Co-student

I agree that training is definitely needed as well as a "tight ship". If you was the manager and was seen receiving the lower officers want the same thing you are getting. Everyone plays dumb ... that is the first thing their attorney tells them to do.
I disagree with the background test...these test are not conclusive enough to gauge integrity, morals or good ethics. Further all children have not received the correct instilling of good morals, ethics and values and it is evident by current societal practices, behavior and treatment of others. For example, bullying, cyber stalking, etc.

I agree with you that the inclination to commit crimes are learned from others or exhibited behavior. But the inner desire to change this type of learned behavior has to be an inward facilitator and desire and not a crutch to help them stand.
I also agree with my own point and that is no reward is a pleasure in itself.
A "no thank you" still stands.

Thank you.

Interaction in class to Professor’s comment

I agree with both Newt Gingrich and President Obama and would like to further state that a white woman does not understand the misery and hardship that a black woman suffers today to be an individualized citizen without threat of being crushed by men and society.

Thank you.
