Laughter wild with screaming pain echoed the halls night day

Slamming doors of snap looked askance at all who dared to come

Creaking floors giggled come anyway inside come anyway inside and play for leave you won’t today tomorrow ever they say they say

Kunta’s Flight for Freedom

A night of cold anger sparkled with hate caressed the woods of dark unremorse

Far into darkened sadness the night invited all of freedom seeking to dance with feet of quicken

Guile and slippery thoughts giggled hysterically inside his mind to run run run until his heart smiled

Freedom Freedom song its sweet thrilling blessing to come come come come Kunta and all repressed oppressed

Mesmerized by the ghostly allure of the North Star he followed as it called his name deep in state of murmur

I come I come he replied with running strides of long consuming space as it flew by speed

Harsh was the speed as it cajoled him with giddy laughter fly Kunta fly for the hounds bay loud with vicious epithets and foaming saliva smiled

Sweat dripping from his head torso glistened as the threat choked his heart and thundered evade evade as he came close to swamp land swamp land

Ears perked upward for acute was his mind and soul to the cringing clinking noise that became hideously loud until his mind swimmed with panic to run faster faster as his hand clenched his joujou bag

Superhuman strength became his as he prayed and leaped past a sleeping crocodile whose yellow eyes watched with alarming quickening interest and teeth of ominous length glistened hunger

Listening to the splashing thunder of its movements Kunta continued forward swerving twisting zigzagging until he reached the end and the trail ended abrupt

Bending over heart churning inside Kunta breathe deep life giving air as he fell to his knees with thanks hearing the retreat of his hunters and screams of the hounds and silence silence silence for he was free and slave no more

A Boy Named Jabe

Inspired by Big Jabe, written by Jerdine Nolen, illustrated by Kadir Nelson.

Momma Poppa lived a time of slave times running with a tree of old done and trustful no more with flowers a blossom

Whispering low and sweet the tree reminiscences and tells of how freedom
marched in and freed the slaves on Plenty Plantation true

Addy Addy was a young house slave on Plenty Plantation who cleaned cleaned the house and big and fished fished until all were fed contentment wise

Mr. Plenty Mr. Plenty was indeed the epitome of contentment for his love of catfish bass and brim was herald loud and true with a smile of benevolence favor to Addy for bringing all

A day of hunger struck him loudly and with directions clear he sent Addy with fishing rod of caught quick

Midday Midday came went with a catch of none for she tried tried for anger and hunger she wanted to face naught at all for in her eye she saw

Instead of fish came a basket of woven intricacies and cradled inside was a boy of five or six smiling smiling angelic fair as she lifted him into arms of concern love

Gracious sweet he gifted her with a pear of color gold heaven that tasted ambrosia delicacy

A name of Jabe was the curious boy from nowhere found as he took the seeds of apple and buried them quick for they pop pop and say we grow we grow triple far and tall as wick

Looking at Addy with eyes of huge brown curious he asked idea of want for her desire to catch fish fish was her intent and with a joyous grin Jabe called them to summon and perform acrobatic twists turns flips of amazing as they piled willingly in wagon of empty

Feast Feast they did for plenty came to feed all all in the quarters of house and house of big

Fed Fed they all slept full replete with sweet elation

Addy fisher of fish laughed full for Jabe was indeed the catch of the day and how he called the fish from waters of quiet and watched as they propelled themselves into wagon of free

Plenty Plenty Plantation indeed was the favor since Jabe came and he grew grew magically tall month by month and worked harder than fifty men alone

Jabe was blessed and all prospered freely from his hands of tender giving of love and love returned

Jabe Jabe plucked plucked cotton in whirls of wind until all was gathered tendered bagged free

Anger stirred ferocious fire in Mr. Sorenson’s craw as Jabe did wondrous deeds of miraculous and inside him brimmed hate fierce with anger
thundering until he displayed a whipping good on poor innocent Pot-Tim for a tune he whistled happy

Turn for turn a twister blew in hard cold beating and tossing all aside like twist of dice as the chicken coop twirled swirled until found a new perch to rest as Pot-Tim and family disappeared all within the next swirl free

Jabe handy and swift nailed nailed with steady pounds until the roof raised tight secure right sound as drum rings

Once again anger stirred ferocious fire in Mr. Sorenson’s craw as Jabe did wondrous deeds of miraculous and inside him brimmed hate fierce with anger thundering until he displayed a whipping good on poor innocent Jubal for trying to help roof of gone

Turn for turn the heaven of sky rained hard hard until slices whipped every surface and carried away Lester, Sweetie Belle and Jubal to a life free

Plenty Plenty Plantation flourished rich sparkle all the summer with speckled cows rich with rivers of milk, sheep of wool aplenty and barn full of cotton bales of heavy and smokehouse of three to handle the smoking of all meat and a larder in the big house so full it cried full

Looking with eyes of avid curiosity Mr. Sorenson asked asked George how how did Susie become young young again

George looked questioned at Mr. Sorenson and told him unclear that Susie was found in the woods aprancing free

Looking peculiar in the face Mr. Sorenson searchingly questioned the thought that Jabe was the solution for mysterious became strange prosperity for Plenty Plantation and a key to it all was Addy the starting begin

Anger stirred ferocious fire in Mr. Sorenson’s craw as Jabe did wondrous deeds of miraculous still and inside him brimmed hate fierce with anger thundering until he displayed distrust and suspicion of Addy casting spells and jiggling charms of magic and a wish to sell her quick for the riches were abundant true
